Summer school

We are happy to inform you that the Second International Summer Linguistics School for high school students will take place in Narva-Joesuu, Estonia on July 22-30, 2006, just the week preceding the 5th International Linguistics Olympiad in St.-Petersburg, Russia. Traditionally (since 2001) this has been a summer school for students from St. Petersburg, Russia, with Estonian participants joining occasionally. It started as a summer part of the Linguistics Olympiad School founded at the St. Petersburg State University at the end of 2000 for school students who were successful in the Linguistics Olympiad, with the purpose of teaching them some theoretical and applied linguistics. It is usually held in Estonia as it is close to St. Petersburg, accommodation there is better and cheaper than in Russia, and participants get a chance to combine studies with a good rest at a sea resort and visiting a new country.

Last year, however, we decided to invite students from all countries taking part in the ILO4.  Lectures on different aspects of linguistics were held by people from St. Petersburg State University, from Moscow and Bulgaria. All the lectures were performed in English, which was logically the official language of the event. Students had from 4 to 6 hours of lectures daily, including practical sessions on solving linguistics problems. On the only day-off an excursion to Tallinn was arranged. According to the opinions of all the last year’s participants the school was a success and throughout this year we’ve been receiving letters asking us whether the second school will take place. It was not an easy decision for us as we are also the Organising Committee for the Olympiad but finally we resolved to do it. The program of the forgoing school is basically going to be the same as last year with some natural differences in the contents of the studies. After the end of the school which is July 30 we’ll arrange a bus to carry the ILO5 participants to St.-Petersburg (the distance is only 140 km to there from Narva-Joesuu).

The price for all the period will be about ˆ250 per person (this includes three meals a day). Groups from each country are of course supposed to have team leaders whose participation fees will be lower.

The school most probably will take place at the hotel Mereranna. The list of lectures will be available later.

The deadline for applications is 31 May 2007.
